Shake the Mango Tree is a true story of a child in the Congo. Rupat is forced to flee through a hole in the fence, unsure of what lay ahead, he embarks on a perilous journey to find safety in a refugee camp. Along the way there are moments of sweetness, mangoes that nourished his body and spirit.
An experiential activity called Pack Your Bag will be offered, with discussion afterwards about what was packed and how it might feel as a refugee, including your sense of belonging.
For kids ages 7-11 and their families.

Ruth Beardsley lives in Squamish and is an early childhood educator, author, and grandmother. Ruth worked for 40 years in Community Services and Early Learning Programs before retiring. She received the United Way Community Impact Award, recognizing her work with refugee families and their young children. Shake the Mango Tree is her second children’s book, her first is My Heart in Kenya.
Conveniently located downtown, the Squamish Public Library has a large meeting room, quiet study spaces, an outdoor pickup window, and an art gallery.
